Put Your Best Face Forward

The Superhair0 guide for

preparing your skin for makeup.

I have been a makeup artist for about 15 years, and I absolutely love it! There’s not many things as satisfying as creating a great makeup job for a Wanaka wedding or event. A good makeup look comes from the artist's skill, but a truly flawless, stunning makeup job starts with the canvas. In this blog I want to talk about things you can do to help prepare for your perfect makeup look.

Skin

It all starts with the skin. If the face and skin are looking great on their own, the makeup will apply smoothly and look so much more natural. I’m not a beauty therapist or a dermatologist, so I will leave the skin advice to them. What I do know is that you want to start working on your skin as soon as possible, because it's a long game, not a short one. I highly recommend talking to a trusted skin expert as everyone has different skin types or skin problems and it is important to know what your particular skin type needs to be at its best. This might include facials, treatments or a consistent skin care regime.

On the day of your Wanaka makeup service, it can be a great time to use some eye mask pads, these help reduce creasing and plump up the under eye area. A lip scrub can also work wonders for dry flakey lips. These can be purchased ready-made or mix a little coconut oil and sugar together, rub gently on the lips, remove and apply lip balm to hydrate. Do these things first thing in the morning, but just make sure you have used these before and you like the results (we don't want any unforeseen skin reactions on the day).

I advise my clients to have a clean dry face and have used their regular cleanser, toner, moisturiser regime, however steer clear of heavy oily moisturisers and oily serums because the makeup will struggle to stay put on top of oils. Something light that absorbs into your skin is ideal, and doing this at least 20 minutes before makeup, gives it a chance to absorb fully into the skin before we start to prime for makeup.

Lashes

Lashes have more options than one might think possible. Extensions or falsies can be applied long or short term, tinted and permed! Part of my makeup service does include single use lashes if desired, but if you want the most realistic long lashes, I would suggest lash extensions, these do look truly beautiful. You can also have your lashes tinted, which I highly recommend if your lashes are on the lighter side. Lastly, there is the lash perm. You can have your lashes permed to give them more of a lifted, curled up effect which lasts longer than just using a lash curler on the day. If you have very straight lashes, or hooded eyelids, this could be a great option for you; this will also help blend in any single use lashes we apply. If you're unsure what's right for you, talk to your trusted beauty therapist or send in a photo before your service, and I will be happy to offer my advice.

Brows

If you thought lashes had options, brace yourself for the endless brow possibilities!

Firstly, I highly recommend having your brows tidied about a week before your service. I can pluck out strays, but no one wants redness under the brows on their special day, so seeing a professional beforehand is advisable. Brows can be plucked, waxed, threaded, shaved or lasered into submission. However, if tidy isn't enough, you can also have them laminated and tinted or even microbladed into the perfect brow. If you're unsure what's right for you, do a little research online and ask your trusted beauty therapist what's right for you.

Tans

If you are wanting to get a spray tan, I highly recommend going for a test run well in advance, to ensure you are happy with the shade. Where this relates to your makeup service is that your face will want to match the rest of your skin, so be prepared for your foundation to be darker than you are used to. This can sometimes throw people off a little, as they are not used to seeing their face in a different shade. I recommend a makeup trial shortly after a tan trial, to get the full effect, and to make sure it's exactly what you want
